NX-Monitor

Nutanix statistics, always ready.

A service reads Prism Central and Prism Element of all your customers every five minutes and keeps the history in its own database: when the report is due, the data is already there. Technicians browse clusters, VMs, capacity, data protection and alerts from a desktop app, and every customer receives its weekly report by email.

  • Prism Central · Prism Element
  • Windows · Linux · macOS · Docker
  • Weekly reports in PDF and Excel
Always collecting Every five minutes from every Prism, and the missing data recovered after a stop.
The report is already there PDF and Excel for each customer, sent by email on the scheduled day.
Gaps stay gaps Where samples are missing the charts break: data is never invented.
Read-only on Prism A read-only account is enough: nothing on Nutanix is ever changed.
In action

Try NX-Monitor right here

A desktop application for Windows, macOS and Linux, connected to the NX-Monitor service. Below, with sample customers: the overview of every cluster, the charts with the reading under the pointer, VM sizing, the capacity forecast and a report generated while you watch.

The interface is the product's own, in its original language; the data are sample data and the simulation is not connected to any system.

The problem

A report that starts from scratch every time

A capacity report for a Nutanix customer used to mean opening a tool, exporting the data with Nutanix Collector and building the PDF by hand, one customer at a time.

The data existed only from the moment someone exported it, and the report only when someone remembered to prepare it.

The answer

Collect continuously, report on schedule

The NX-Monitor service queries every Prism of every customer without pause and saves the time series in SQLite. After a stop it recovers the missing data from Prism, starting from the last sample saved.

Reports are built from data that is already there: PDF and Excel with the same figures, scheduled per customer with day, time and time zone, and sent by email with the main observations in the message.

Features

What NX-Monitor does

Continuous collection

Statistics of clusters, hosts and VMs — CPU, memory, CPU ready, IOPS, bandwidth, latency, network, storage — every five minutes through the Groups API of Prism Central and Prism Element, or the stats APIs where Groups is missing. Inventory every 30 minutes, alerts every 15, data protection every hour.

Statistics and VM sizing

Average, 95th percentile and maximum over any period. VMs oversized or undersized against their 95th percentile, with the vCPUs and memory that can be recovered.

Capacity forecast

The daily storage history of every cluster and container, with the growth per day and the time left before the warning threshold and before running full.

Data protection and alerts

Protection domains with the status of their RPO, snapshots, Leap protection plans and recovery points; Prism alerts by severity, open and resolved.

Weekly reports

A PDF with your logo and the customer's, a summary with the observations from the thresholds, a section for every cluster, sizing, capacity, protection and alerts; an Excel workbook with one sheet per topic and the hourly series. Scheduled per customer and sent by email.

An app for the technicians

For Windows, macOS and Linux, connected to the service over HTTPS with the certificate pinned at the first connection. Local users as Reader, Operator or Administrator; customers, environments and schedules configured from the app.

How it works

One run, step by step

  1. 1

    Install the service

One installer for Windows, Linux and macOS, with a guided wizard or an answer file; or a Docker container.

  2. 2

    Add customers and environments

Prism Central or Prism Element with a read-only account or an API key; the test shows the clusters it finds.

  3. 3

    Let it collect

The first collection recovers the last days of history: the first report is useful straight away.

  4. 4

    Browse and send

Technicians open the app; every customer receives its report on the scheduled day.

Requirements

What it takes

Nutanix
Prism Central and Prism Element; a read-only account (Viewer, or Prism Viewer on Prism Central) on every cluster, or an API key
Service
Windows Server 2016 or later; Linux x64 or arm64 with systemd; macOS on Apple Silicon or Intel; or a Docker container
Technicians' app
Windows 10, 11 or Windows Server; Linux x64 or arm64 with a desktop; macOS on Apple Silicon or Intel
Network
HTTPS 9440 from the service to every Prism; HTTPS 8460 from the technicians to the service; SMTP for the reports
Data
SQLite in the data folder of the service; Prism passwords, API keys and the SMTP password encrypted

FAQ

What people ask us

Does NX-Monitor change anything on Prism?

No. It only reads: a read-only account is enough, and nothing on Nutanix is touched, not even when NX-Monitor is uninstalled.

What if the service stops for a while?

At the next cycle it reads from Prism what is missing, starting from the last sample saved, within the days of history it is set to recover (7 by default). A weekly report skipped while the service was off starts at the first chance, once.

How long is the data kept?

By default five-minute samples for 62 days, the daily summaries of the clusters and the container occupancy for three years, generated reports and resolved alerts for 400 days. Every period can be changed in the settings; maintenance applies them every six hours.

Can several technicians use it?

Yes. There is one service, and the app connects to it from every technician's PC. Each technician has a user with a role: Reader browses and downloads, Operator also generates and sends reports and starts collections, Administrator manages everything.

Are the credentials of Prism safe?

Passwords and API keys of Prism and the SMTP password are encrypted in the database of the service — machine DPAPI on Windows, AES-GCM with a key file readable only by the service elsewhere — and never go back to the app.

Is NX-Monitor an official Nutanix product?

No. NX-Monitor is developed by Corellix Software Engineering and uses the public APIs of Prism. Nutanix, Prism and AHV are trademarks of Nutanix, Inc.
